Equifax cyber security incident update for Canadians

In sharing information about the cyber security breach and its impact to Canadians, Equifax Canada says it will be notifying impacted Canadians by mail to help protect their privacy.  This communication will outline steps they should take and will offer them free credit monitoring and identity theft protection for 12 months.

The company emphasizes that no Equifax representative will contact impacted Canadians by phone or email. Be on the alert as fraudsters may try to contact Canadians claiming to be Equifax in an attempt to access information.  Please do not provide personal information to anyone who may contact you by phone or email, claiming to be an Equifax representative.

While the investigation is ongoing and information may change, Equifax has said the incident involves potential access to the personal information of approximately 100,000 Canadians. The information that may have been breached includes name, address, Social Insurance Number and, in limited cases, credit card numbers.

Equifax recommends monitoring personal information and being extra vigilant when reviewing account statements and credit records, and reporting any irregular activity to your financial institutions and credit card companies.
